I don’t know if you’ll ever read this, but I need to get it out of my chest because it’s been sitting heavy in me.
I keep thinking about that conversation—how it spiraled, how tense it became, how suddenly it felt like we were standing on opposite sides instead of the same one. And more than anything, I feel guilty. I feel ashamed. I hate that frustration crept in between us when what I actually felt was fear of losing you.
I know you already had so much on your plate that day. Stress from other things, weight you were already carrying. And then I sent messages that didn’t land the way I meant them to. I can see that now. I can see how they might’ve sounded sharper, or colder, or wrong. I never wanted to push you. I never wanted to add to what you were already dealing with.
When you were sending those long messages trying to explain how you felt, my brain started shutting down. That’s what happens to me sometimes when things get intense—I go into survival mode. I stop processing the way I want to. I read but don’t really read. I panic. Toward the end, when I said I needed to go do some things, that wasn’t me walking away from you. That was me trying not to make it worse. I was scared that if I stayed in that moment while overwhelmed, I’d hurt you even more.
But I know how it probably looked. Like I didn’t care. Like I was done. And that kills me, because that’s the opposite of what I felt.
What makes this harder is the timing. I had just told you I was starting to like you—not in some huge forever kind of way, not with expectations or pressure—but in that quiet, vulnerable way where you finally let yourself lean toward someone. In that way where friendship starts to soften into something warmer, something closer. I didn’t need promises. I didn’t need a future mapped out. I just wanted connection. I wanted to be seen. I wanted to keep learning each other.
And now it feels like I finally opened that door… and then watched it start to close.
I keep replaying everything, wondering what I should’ve said differently, how I could’ve slowed down, how I could’ve explained what was happening in my head instead of retreating. I’m scared I hurt you. I’m scared you think I didn’t care. I’m scared you’re sitting with guilt too, and I don’t want that. I don’t think either of us was wrong—I think two overwhelmed people crashed into each other at the worst possible moment.
I hate how fast my mind goes to blaming myself. I hate how quickly I turn one hard interaction into proof that I ruin things. I hate how lonely it feels to finally let someone in again after being careful for so long… and then feel like I scared them away by being human.
You mattered to me, Pup. You still do. Even if this never turns into anything more than what it already was, I don’t regret caring. I just wish you could see that none of this came from indifference. It came from wanting to protect both of us and not knowing how in that moment.
I hope you’re okay. I hope you’re not beating yourself up the way I am. I hope you know that behind every clumsy message and every pause was someone who didn’t want to lose you.
